I was born and grew up in sunny Durban, South Africa, where I schooled and qualified as a secondary school teacher in English and Afrikaans. In 1998, my husband (also a school teacher) and I together with my two, toddler sons relocated to New Zealand where we lived and taught mostly in the Waikato region of the North Island. Here we were graced with a beautiful daughter to complete the family. In 2005, we moved to a little piece of paradise called the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, and which we now happily call home. We taught initially in local high schools and then the teacher turned businesswoman and now I currently run three KIP MCGRATH after-school tuition franchises in Ashmore, Mudgeeraba, and Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, where they say that the weather is beautiful one day and perfect the next.
My Philosophy in Education
When it comes to learning, I try to foster a growth mindset which focuses on students being the best version of themselves through hard work and a “can-do” attitude. The goal should not be for every student to achieve A-grades - just be the best you can be. I believe that every child should occupy their rightful place in society but it is often difficult to do so when one is suffering from lack of confidence and poor self esteem. Through acquiring functional levels of numeracy and literacy, a student can feel confident enough to be happy in school and in life. I am also mindful that each child is unique and each and every one of them should be celebrated for their strengths whether it is academic, art, music, interpersonal skills, drama, culinary skills or sport.
Writing provides me with a creative outlet and I write a weekly motivational blog, a travel blog, educational articles and curriculum material. I try to get into my little suburban garden as often as I can and am a couch spectator for rugby, cricket and tennis. I have always been an avid reader and recently migrated from taditional to audiobooks as it allows me to simultaneously dabble in my other interests like art, cooking, gardening and handcrafts. I love to travel and to write about my travels. I love learning about the wonderful places in our world and learning about new cultures, cuisines and creeds. I am at my happiest when I am immersed in nature because nature has beauty, simplicity and sustenance that is unparalleled.
I am a secondary school English teacher, curriculum writer, social media content writer, motivational writer/speaker, travel blogger, mentor and businesswoman
